Back in July 2017, I hit the road to write a story about fry bread in the Salt River Valley (also known as The Valley of the Sun, anchored by Phoenix in the middle). This was before I started as food editor at Phoenix New Times. The story turned out to be one of the better stories I have written. It's a run through past and present guided by the Native Americans who spoke with me and the fry bread they cook. It was also nice to spotlight Native American culture, a subject that deserves more attention.
